Cultural heritage represents the collective identity, traditions, beliefs, and historical experiences of societies across generations. The preservation of cultural heritage is no longer viewed solely as the responsibility of governments or heritage institutions; rather, community participation has emerged as a central component of sustainable conservation practices. This paper examines the significance of local community engagement in heritage conservation and its contribution to strengthening cultural identity, social cohesion, and sustainable development. Through a qualitative review of existing literature and selected case examples, the study explores how community-based initiatives encourage ownership, promote intergenerational knowledge transfer, and improve the effectiveness of conservation efforts. The findings suggest that heritage conservation becomes more sustainable when local communities actively participate in planning, implementation, and decision-making. The paper concludes that integrating local knowledge with institutional support offers an inclusive and resilient approach to preserving cultural heritage in the twenty-first century.
