Abstract
This study examines the sound horeg phenomenon in Indonesia, particularly East Java, through an integrated perspective of cultural identity, social solidarity, akhlak and adab, public health, social responsibility, maslahah, and maqasid al-shariah. The study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) and qualitative thematic synthesis of 13 verified studies published mainly during 2024-2026, supplemented by foundational and international literature on systematic review methodology, Islamic ethical reasoning, and environmental noise. The synthesis identifies four interrelated dimensions. First, sound horeg functions as cultural expression, youth identity, collective enjoyment, solidarity, and an economic activity. Second, the same practice produces contestation because benefits experienced by participants may coexist with costs borne by residents and nonparticipants. Third, excessive and poorly managed noise raises legitimate health, comfort, sleep, hearing, and social-order concerns, although general environmental-noise evidence should not be converted into causal claims about every sound horeg event. Fourth, Islamic ethical reasoning shifts the evaluation from a binary question of permissible versus prohibited entertainment toward a contextual assessment of intention, manner, intensity, timing, location, consent, and consequences.
