ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: BUILDING A CULTURE OF SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Abstract

Environmental sustainability has become an important concern in contemporary society due to increasing pollution, natural resource depletion, climate change, and the degradation of ecosystems. Although governments and environmental organisations introduce various conservation programmes, their long-term success depends partly on public awareness and meaningful community participation. Environmental problems are not exclusively scientific or technological issues; they are also connected with social values, cultural practices, economic activities, and individual behaviour. This paper examines the relationship between environmental awareness and community participation from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences. It adopts a qualitative, literature-based approach to explore the importance of environmental education, collective responsibility, local knowledge, and participatory environmental governance. The discussion highlights the role of families, educational institutions, community organisations, and local authorities in encouraging sustainable practices. It also considers the barriers that may limit public participation, including inadequate information, economic constraints, unequal decision-making power, and limited institutional support. The analysis suggests that awareness campaigns are more likely to contribute to meaningful environmental action when communities are included in planning, implementation, and evaluation. The paper argues that sustainable living requires a combination of individual responsibility, collective action, inclusive governance, and long-term educational engagement. It concludes that environmental protection should be understood as a shared social responsibility rather than solely a governmental or technical obligation.
