DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN THE INFORMATION AGE

Digital technologies have fundamentally transformed communication, education, governance, and civic participation across the world. University students represent one of the most digitally connected groups and increasingly participate in public discourse through online platforms. While digital environments create opportunities for civic engagement, social awareness, and democratic participation, they also introduce challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, online polarization, and declining trust in public institutions. This study examines the relationship between digital citizenship and civic responsibility among university students. Using a qualitative review of contemporary literature, the paper explores the dimensions of responsible digital behavior, ethical online participation, media literacy, and digital rights. The findings suggest that promoting digital citizenship through educational institutions can strengthen democratic values, encourage responsible participation, and foster inclusive online communities. The paper recommends integrating digital citizenship education into university curricula to prepare students for responsible engagement in both digital and physical societies.
