COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND SOCIAL COHESION IN URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Urbanization has transformed societies by creating diverse communities characterized by varying cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. While cities offer opportunities for economic growth and innovation, they also present challenges related to social cohesion, trust, and community engagement. This study examines the relationship between community participation and social cohesion within urban neighborhoods. Through a qualitative review of existing literature and analysis of community development practices, the paper explores how civic participation strengthens interpersonal trust, promotes collective action, and contributes to inclusive urban development. The findings suggest that active citizen involvement enhances neighborhood resilience, reduces social isolation, and supports democratic governance. However, barriers such as socioeconomic inequality, cultural fragmentation, and limited institutional support continue to hinder effective participation. The study concludes by recommending participatory governance models, inclusive public spaces, and community-based initiatives to strengthen social cohesion in rapidly urbanizing societies.
